Coffee table book to toast good old Shimla

Shimla, Dec 2 (IANS)  Those nostalgic about the good old times in Shimla should be delighted. Coming up is a coffee table book detailing the history of this city that was a seat of power in British India. “We are bringing out a coffee table book carrying details about eminent personalities and imperial buildings associated with the British era.

This will also help tourists, especially from Britain, to know the heritage of the town,” Tourism Director Arun Kumar told IANS. He said most of the tourists have been complaining about lack of information about the heritage of this town. “All prominent heritage buildings would be photographed and a brief history would be compiled. Some of the buildings or monuments that have been damaged or refurbished would be exhibited in black and white sketches in the book that will be published by March next year,” he said. The department has also requested prominent century-old institutions and private owners of historical buildings to provide details about their property.

“We have written to prominent institutions like Bishop Cotton School, St Bede’s College and Christ Church (located on the Ridge) to provide us rare documents or photographs in their possession,” the official said. The ‘Queen of Hills’, as Shimla was fondly called by the British, has 91 British-era heritage buildings. These include Ellerslie (housing the state secretariat), Vidhan Sabha, Peterhoff (which was completely renovated after being devastated in a fire nearly two decades ago and now serves as the state guest house), United Services Club, Town Hall, Barnes Court (housing Raj Bhavan), Viceregal Lodge (now housing the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies) and Gordon Castle. More than 60 years after the British left, this Himalayan town still attracts their descendants who are eager to know their roots.

Himachal Pradesh attracted 9.37 million domestic and 367,000 foreign tourists last year. Kullu and Manali are the hot spots for tourists, followed by Shimla and Dharamsala.

Weather stays pleasant in Shimla

Shimla: Cold wind sweeping across Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh kept the weather relatively cool today despite no rains.

The ‘Queen of Hills’ recorded day temperature of 20.2 degree Celsius as compared to 20.8 degree Celsius yesterday, Met office sources said.

The state capital saw a sunny day, but cool breeze kept the mercury at pleasant level.

Elsewhere too, there was not much change in the mercury as Bhuntar recorded a maximum of 26.5 degree Celsius, while it was 17.1 degree Celsius in Kalpa, the sources added.

The Met office has forecast mainly dry weather in the state tomorrow.

Manali gets seasons first snowfall

Nov 9 (IANS) Popular tourist resort of Manali saw the season’s first snowfall Monday as severe cold intensified across Himachal Pradesh, the meteorological office said.

Hills overlooking Manali were covered in a thin sheet of white after the snowfall, said Manmohan Singh, director of the meteorological office in Shimla.

In Manali town, the fresh snow melted away by afternoon but snowfall began again by evening.

Generally, Manali gets its first snowfall by mid-December.

It has also been snowing in the tribal belt of Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur. Kalpa in Kinnaur and Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti received 2 to 3 inches of snowfall.

The Rohtang Pass (13,050 feet) and the Baralacha Pass (16,020 ft) – located on the Manali-Leh highway – also experienced snow.

Lower areas of the state, including Dharamsala, Shimla, Solan, Nahan, Bilaspur and Mandi received moderate to heavy rain, bringing the temperature down considerably.

‘The maximum temperature at Shimla fell to 11.5 degrees Celsius from Sunday’s 21 degrees Celsius,’ Shimla Met Office chief Manmohan Singh said.

‘On an average, the maximum temperature across the state fell by 8 to 9 degrees Celsius,’ he added.

The Met Office said there is a possibility of more snowfall and rain Tuesday.

Message Me and my Wife stayed in Sunrise Villa in a family suite during my trip to Shimla in October 2009. I must say this is one of the best places to stay in Shimla. The villa is located in a serene and beautiful locale in a place called Shoghi (13kms from Shimla). The breathtaking view from the rooms makes the experience even more memorable. Special mention of the beautiful view of the sunrise and sunset that can be witnessed (One of the best in Shimla). Add to this the homely atmosphere and food (We just loved the paratha sabzi we were served) and that rounds off a perfect blend for a wonderful stay. I would definitely recommend Sunrise Villa to all my friends who wish to vist Shimla.
